Editorial Review:
Product Description: The Russian horde Arkona delivers a masterpiece of Slavic Pagan Metal with their latest full-length release "Ot Serdca K Nebu", or "From the Heart to the Sky". Traditional folk instruments merge skillfully with powerful guitar riffs and pounding drums creating catchy yet versatile songs that have quickly become the trademark of mastermind and frontwoman Masha Scream. Her unique compositions and lyrics set the stage for her impressive vocals that range from clean passages to brutal screams and grunts. The lyrical concept breathes of lore and legend, inviting the listener to enter the realm of nearly forgotten gods. Already a major force within Russia, Arkona is armed and ready to conquer the rest of the world with "Ot Serdca K Nebu". Draw your swords and prepare for the coming storm!

I had never heard of Arkona till this album came up in my recommendation list. Being curious, I checked out the samples and subsequently decided that I had to have the full album. The singer does both screaming and regular singing vocals (I'm forced to make a Kittie comparison, although in my opinion Arkona's singer has a much better voice). The music is excellent folk metal with all the requisite fiddles, bagpipes, penny whistles, and such, but with a darker feel than, say, Korpiklaani. If you're a fan of Eluveitie or Finntroll, you'll probably like Arkona. If you're a fan of both (which I am), buy this album; you will love it.

Arkona play a very impressive blend of Russian folk and metal. The female vocalist has an amazing range. Sometimes she sings so sweetly that I am sure she is getting the attention of the old gods she is calling. In this mode, she conjurs the image of an ancient priestess in the primordial wood. Then her beautiful voice changes into such a hideous growl that it is hard to believe that the same person is singing. For me, this growling detracts from the epic feel of the music and hence, I give this release four instead of five stars. It has always seemed to me, that growling vocals are for bands who can't find a competant singer. This is so obviously NOT the case with Arkona that I am dunbfounded. Maybe a nod to fans of formulaic death metal?
That having been said, this album is still great. Much of the music has the feel of Heathen hymns and the liner notes are very informative.
I do not know much about the Pagan Russians but I have definately learned something. ... Read More
