Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: From the first blanket of choral voices awash in reverb, Amarantine is instantly recognizable as a product of Enya, the Irish chanteuse who has created a genre unto herself. Although it's been five years since her last CD, on Amarantine it's as if time stood still. The triumvirate of Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan work the formula they perfected on Watermark, layering her voice in lush choirs pushed along by pizzicato synth strings, swooning orchestral pads, and harpsichord arpeggios. On tracks like "Less Than a Pearl" and "Drifting," Enya flirts with a timeless sound born in gothic chants and hymns. The former is one of three songs that she sings in Roma Ryan's fictitious language of Loxian. It seems to free her, especially on "The River Sings," a veritable rave-up where she gets the tribal choir going in the style of Scottish mouth music. But to get there you have to slog through slo-mo ballads that manage to be dirge-like and singsong at the same time, like the Carpenters on Quaaludes. The relatively restrained arrangement of "It's in the Rain" almost attains a folk-like simplicity that Enya hasn't experienced since she sang with her siblings in Clannad a quarter-century ago. Amarantine sounds like it was born in cloistered solitude, self-referentially echoing Enya albums past. --John Diliberto

I really wanted to give this album four stars instead of five, but I couldn't. It's Enya!! Her voice is so angelic and ethereal that I just can't; even though I only listen to the first three songs: Less Than A Pearl (intensely beautiful!!) Amarantine (I saw her perform this live. I cried.), and It's In The Rain (exhilarating. Especially when it's actually raining. Lol!). Another beautiful CD.... Thanks again, Enya.

I find it strange that Enya left Clannad for their turning to pop because this album is pretty much pop with a mixture of a couple of New Age tunes. Instead of the gentle drone of the synthesizer or a lovely orchestra, this is very loud and almost at times drowns out Enya's voice. The lyrics also are very poor. Roma Ryan has written beautiful lyrics before, but these on this album are weak and lack the power seen on Enya's earlier works. Loxian, while being an interesting addition, doesn't sound much different than the mouth music used on songs like "The Celts" or "The Longships".
"Less than a Pearl"- pretty but the music threatens to drown out the singer
"Amarantine"- catchy tune, horrible lyrics
"It's in the Rain"- lacks emotion
"If I could Be Where You Are"- lacks emotion
"The River Sings"- catchy tune but the music is disorganized and threatens to drown out the voice
"Long Long Journey"- pretty

I don't really care for New Age music. It's basically ambient/electronica's yuppie neo-conservative older sister. But it's better listening than alot of today's pop music. The only songs I ever heard from Enya was Orinnoco Flow and one other from way back in the day. Catchy but gimmicky as far as I was concerned. Last night I had sex with friend (ok, it wasn't exactly "lovemaking") and she asked me what I wanted to listen to. She loves New Age music and has an extensive collection of Yanni, Andreas Vollenweider, George Winston and Enigma among others. I definitely didn't want to hear any Enigma. That's a mood killer almost as bad as Yanni. So she surprised me and put this on. I didn't know who it was at first but I did guess that it was Enya. The music was beautiful. Very haunting especially the last track. Stuck in my head even after I left this morning. I still don't care for New Age but maybe I'll get re-educated one cd at a time. Or maybe it's just ... First off, I'm a new Enya fan... just this year. Yeah, I'm also the LotR freak, so I've heard Aniron, May it Be, and practically drooled over them... very lovely. That wasn't enough to get me into 'Enya'. I am also a huge lover of music, I own all three of the LotR complete recordings... I go for music. I love music. I'm also very conservative. I don't listen to rock... just hymns and some soundtrack... Narnia's first two scores were something of a disappointment. So, I'm picky. Yes, it's true... I don't go for guady jewelry, I don't like banging music. I like soft, quite, thoughtful, or happy and chipper. I am a die-hard for sad music too. I want something to make me cry. I was given Celtic Woman and expected a lot, I was disappointed. Only two songs I would ever buy... so, when I got into Enya I wasn't expecting to like every single song except one in all of her albums.
Enya is... well... Enya paints pictures in my mind. I see a scene of nature or between people everytime I ... Read More

I dunno why I haven't written a review on this piece of junk before. I've only owned it since it came out. In fact, I pre-ordered it before its release since I'm a super Enya fan and listen to the "other" CD's often. But this one - I've listened to it once again to see if it was as crxxpy as i had remembered. IT WAS! Maybe if I start listing things on the net, I'll be able to unload this and make space for good music.
